Chef, entrepreneur and mother Rachel Goenka has recently bagged one of the most prestigious awards in the world for cookbooks, The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2020, in the category of pastry and desserts for her debut recipe book, Adventures with Mithai.
She is founder and chief executive officer of the award-winning restaurant, The Sassy Spoon in Mumbai and Pune, and her book was published in October 2019 by Harper Collins.
A first-of-its-kind cookbook containing 50 original recipes, it is an ode to Indian mithai - including chocolate barfi-flavoured cheesecake to cardamom mousse sprinkled with motichoor laddoo - in never-seen-before avatars, metamorphosed into international gourmet desserts.
Commenting on her achievement, Goenka stated, “My book is inspired by India, which is why I chose mithai as the subject for my first book. I wanted to showcase to the rest of the world just how versatile our Indian mithai is and how it can lend itself to so many contemporary desserts.”
“I couldn’t be happier that my book, and its concept that represents India, has been recognised and appreciated by the Gourmand Awards,” she added.
Founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, The Gourmand World Cookbook Awards honours excellence in the best food and wine books across print, digital and television.
The awards are a unique opportunity to build the image of the food culture in a country. This year, a total of 225 countries participated in the competition under various categories, such as, Chef Book Women Chef Book, Easy Recipes, Pastry and Desserts, etc.
