India has 7,486 cold storages with a capacity of 34.82 million tonnes, agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
While replying to a question, he said that the highest number of 2,709 storages were in Uttar Pradesh having a capacity of 165.46 million tonnes.
Gujarat had second highest number of cold storages at 636 with 17.99 million tonnes capacity followed by Maharashtra with 850,440 tonnes capacity in 579 storages and Punjab which had 553 storages with 17.75 million tonnes capacity.
Himachal Pradesh, he said, had 25 cold storages with storing capacity of 52,091 tonnes.
"The department of agriculture and cooperation provides financial assistance for setting up cold storages in the country under its two centrally sponsored schemes," he informed.
The National Horticulture Board (NHB) has recently received two proposals for setting up cold storages in Himachal Pradesh for which it has issued Letter of Intent and that funds will be released as back-ended credit-linked subsidy after completion of projects.
Pawar said the subsidy could be provided even to individuals wanting to set up cold storages but "free power and free land is not possible."
