Sbarro to set up 100 restaurants in India
Saturday, 23 September, 2006, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Phani Raj, Hyderabad
eading quick-service Italian restaurant company has established a joint venture with India-based RTC to open 100 restaurants in India.

Sbarro's joint venture with RTC, Sbarro Restaurants (India) Limited, will develop and operate India's first Sbarro restaurants in New Delhi by 2007, with 10 units opening every year over the next 10 years. The majority of the restaurants will be located within shopping malls in major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi and Mumbai.

Earlier this year, Sbarro announced agreements to open more than 75 units in regions across the globe, including Mexico, Egypt, Romania, Central America and The Bahamas. The joint venture with RTC will result in Sbarro's largest international expansion to date and allows it to introduce authentic Italian food to India. With 250 malls in development, India presents a huge opportunity for Sbarro and the company plans to establish its brand in the Indian marketplace.

Sbarro will be the first restaurant in India to offer pizza by the slice and a full Italian menu. Menu items will be tailored to the religious and ethnic preferences of the Indian culture and will exclude beef products and meat-based pasta sauces. Additionally, Sbarro chefs will create a variety of new vegetarian dishes to appeal to the largely vegetarian population.

Over the past five decades, Sbarro has grown into the US's leading quick service Italian restaurant company with close to 1,000 units across 30 countries. Sbarro plans to open 100 restaurants in India over the next 10 years, the majority of which will be located in major cities. The deal represents the chain's largest international move to date and is part of an overall plan to extend its reach into other countries including Mexico, Egypt and Romania.

Sbarro operates and franchises nearly 1,000 cafeteria-style Italian-food stands across the US and about 30 other countries. Serving pizza, pasta entrees, and salads, Sbarro's units are typically found in high-traffic locations, such as malls, downtown locations, and toll-road rest areas.

It also has units in other food-court locations, such as airports, college campuses, and sports stadiums. Sbarro has begun selling its sauces at select locations. The company was founded in 1954.
