The Association of Food Scientists and Technologists (I) Mumbai Chapter (AFST Mumbai Chapter) has launched ‘Career Boost Saturday’, a transformative initiative designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge in food technology to address global food security challenges.
The launch event brought together industry professionals, faculty members, and students, fostering a collaborative platform for deeper engagement in food science, sustainability, and innovation.
Bhushan Yengade, joint secretary of AFST Mumbai Chapter, introduced the initiative, emphasising the critical role of food technologists in addressing food safety, preservation, and sustainability challenges. He highlighted that it aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications, preparing students to tackle urgent global issues like food scarcity, post-harvest losses, and nutrient deficiencies.
Yengade said, "Food security is no longer a distant goal, it's a present-day necessity," stressing the need for practical solutions to global food challenges.
Professor Shalini Arya, president of AFST Mumbai Chapter, underscored the significance of food processing in addressing food security. She noted that food preservation and safety are crucial in reducing food wastage and ensuring access to nutritious food worldwide.
“Food processing holds the potential to combat hunger, malnutrition, and food distribution challenges," Professor Arya emphasised, advocating for innovative approaches to sustainable food production.
Renowned food technology expert Dr Chaithanya Hoskote, partner at Sattvedic LLP, delivered an inspiring keynote speech, "Breakthrough Beyond Subject Syllabus," urging students to move beyond textbook learning and focus on real-world applications. "By thinking beyond the syllabus, we can develop breakthrough technologies that make a real difference."
He shared his experience in developing Chapati technology for the Indian Army, showcasing how food technology innovations can enhance food security and support national interests.
The event also featured an engaging session with Bhushan Yengade, who discussed his journey in food technology and policy-making. Having played a key role in establishing mega food parks in Satara and Paithan, he emphasised their importance in boosting local economies, creating jobs, and ensuring sustainable food production.
"Food parks are crucial for enhancing India's food processing capabilities and meeting both domestic and global demand," Yengade said, highlighting their role in reducing food wastage and improving food quality.
Mahendra Ingle, managing partner of Advay Agro, stressed the rising demand for food technologists and the urgent need for sustainable food processing solutions. “Innovation in food processing is key to sustainably feeding the world,” he said, urging students to think critically about eco-friendly food production techniques.
With growing global challenges related to food security, climate change, and sustainable agriculture, Career Boost Saturday represents a significant step in empowering students to drive innovation and sustainability in the food industry. By offering hands-on insights and mentorship from industry experts, the AFST Mumbai Chapter is paving the way for a new generation of food technologists poised to make a meaningful impact on global food security.
