Badal and F&B companies’ representatives chalk out Kerala aid strategy

Harsimrat Kaur Badal, minister for food processing industries, Government of India, met food processing industry representatives to plan a strategy for assistance to be provided to the people of Kerala. The meeting was attended by representatives of such companies as ITC, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Hindustan Unilever, Dabur, MTR, Nestle, Britannia and Marico.

“It is time to work as a cohesive unit and make a coordinated effort to help the people of Kerala, instead of separate entities making individual efforts,” she said, adding that her ministry was in regular contact with the government of the southern state and district officials to gather their requirements.

Badal spoke to Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to express her concern on the calamity and assured the Government of Kerala of all assistance from the ministry of food processing industries (MoFPI).

She sought Vijayan’s inputs on the assistance the was immediately required, and he informed her that lakhs of infants in relief camps were in need of baby food. She conveyed the requirements to the food processing companies.

The meeting was in pursuance of Badal’s recent appeal to food processing companies across India to contribute generously to the Kerala relief operations. Consequently, the companies have pledged full support to MoFPI’s endeavour to reach out to the affected population.

Some of the contributions already made or pledged for delivery within two days are mentioned below:
    • Coca-Cola: While 1.4 lakh litre of packaged drinking water has already been supplied, one lakh litre of packaged drinking water will be supplied over the next two days. Of these, 20,000 bottles have already been dispatched
    • Britannia: While 2.10 lakh packets of biscuits, weighing about 6.5 tonne, has already been delivered to Kochi, 1.25 lakh packets have been delivered to Mallapuram and Wayanad. Over the next two days, 1.25 lakh packets of biscuits will be delivered. Three thousand buns and 10,000 packets of biscuits will be supplied from Madurai
    • Bikanervala: It will supply one lakh packets of namkeen, weighing one million tonne (MT) in coordination with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for delivery
    • MTR Foods Pvt Ltd: About 35,000 packets of ready-to-eat food have already been delivered to Wayanad
    • Nestle: About 90,000 packets of Maggi; two lakh packets of Munch, 1,100 packets of coffee and 2,500 packs of ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk have already been supplied, and the company will supply 40,000 packets of Maggi; one lakh packets of Munch, 1,100 packets of coffee and 2,500 packs of UHT milk, in addition to 30,000 packets of ready0to-drink Milo and 10,000 packs of Serigo
    • Dabur: The company’s contribution is between 30,000 and 40,000 litre of juice in tetra-packs and 10,000 tubes of Odomos
    • PepsiCo: Its contribution is 6.78 lakh litre of packaged drinking water and 10,000kg of Quaker Oats
    • GSK: It will supply relief material worth Rs 10 lakh, one million packets of Horlicks and one million Crocin tablets
    • Bagrrys India Limited: It will supply 10,000 packets of oats, weighing about 2MT
    • ITC: Its contribution is 3.30 lakh packets of biscuits; 2,000 bottles of Savlon; 3,000 packets of dairy whitener, 9,000 packets of liquid hand wash and 7,000 soaps
    • Pernard Ricord and Cargill: They have assured to coordinate with Amul for the supply of milk powder and baby foods
    • Marico: It has committed to supply 30MT of oats
    • Mondelez India Foods Limited: It will contribute cash amounting to Rs 10 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund
    • Hindustan Unilever: About 9,500 cases of salt; 29,000 cases of wheat products; 1,000 cases of ketchup, 250 cases of spices mix masala and other products supplied across Kerala

Badal reiterated her nominations of the officers to coordinate these efforts, and urged the companies to contact them to make the desired donations.
