In a move to enhance the effectiveness of food safety regulations, the Gujarat Government has invited objections and suggestions from the public regarding proposed amendments to the penal provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The notification, issued by the Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) under the Health and Family Welfare Department, aims to tailor enforcement provisions to better suit the specific needs of the state.
The proposed amendments are now available on the official Gujarat Health Department website. Stakeholders, including citizens, institutions, and industry representatives, are encouraged to review the draft and submit their views online. The input window is open for 30 days from the publication date of the notice that is July 21, 2025.
Commissioner of FDCA Gujarat, Dr. Hemant Koshia, emphasized that the move is intended to make food safety laws more stringent and practically enforceable at the state level. "Transparency and stakeholder participation are key to effective policy-making," he noted.
The proposed changes primarily address modifications in penalty clauses to ensure stricter implementation and better deterrence against violations of food safety norms.
Interested parties can access the draft and submit their suggestions via the FDCA portal at https://gujhealth.gujarat.gov.in/citizen-corner.htm or by scanning the QR code provided in the official public notice.
This step by the Gujarat Government highlights its commitment to public health and collaborative governance, inviting a broader dialogue to strengthen food safety enforcement in the state.
