Half of Kanpur’s food found unsafe in tests, FSDA sounds alarm

Abhitash Singh, Mumbai
A shocking revelation has come from the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) of Uttar Pradesh, as nearly half of the food samples tested in Kanpur were found unsafe for consumption.

Out of the 1,324 food samples collected from various eateries, shops, and manufacturers, a significant number were reported to contain non-permitted colours, harmful ripening agents like carbide, and ajinomoto (monosodium glutamate) all posing serious health risks.

Officials noted that adulteration was alarmingly high in milk, edible oils, and street food items, which are consumed daily by thousands of residents. The use of toxic substances and chemical additives for enhancing taste, colour, or preservation has raised major concerns over public health and hygiene standards in the city.

The FSDA has assured strict action against violators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Several samples have been sent for re-testing and legal proceedings are underway against offenders.

Authorities have also appealed to the public to be cautious while consuming food from roadside stalls and to report any suspected cases of adulteration.

This large-scale food safety violation has once again highlighted the urgent need for regular surveillance, stricter enforcement, and consumer awareness to ensure that what’s being served on the plate is truly safe.
