In a move aimed at strengthening the credibility of Indian organic products, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced plans to update the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) guidelines.
The changes are being designed to align with international benchmarks, ensuring Indian organic food products meet stricter global rules. The NPOP standards are already accepted in key markets such as the European Union, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. With the planned revisions, Indian exporters are expected to gain wider recognition and deeper trust in global markets.
According to officials, the updates will cover areas such as global trends in organic food, traceability requirements, and stricter compliance norms. A dedicated panel will study international regulations and incorporate them into the revised framework.
Industry experts believe these changes will boost India’s export credibility and help sustain the strong growth the sector has seen over the past two decades. Farmers and food processors, too, are expected to benefit as better traceability and compliance improve access to overseas markets.
Organic food exports from India have grown steadily in the last 20 years, but maintaining consumer trust and market share requires continuous adaptation to international standards. The proposed NPOP revisions are seen as a crucial step in ensuring that Indian organic products remain competitive globally.
