The Association of Food Scientists and Technologists of India (AFSTI), Mumbai Chapter, celebrated Marathi Gaurav Din with great enthusiasm. On this occasion, the doors of the food technology sector were opened for school students. Various schools from Mumbai actively participated in this initiative. The event aimed to create awareness among students about nutritious food through a special programme.

As part of this initiative, a workshop on the ‘Importance of a Satvik Diet’ was conducted, shedding light on the scientific principles of Satvik food. AFST Mumbai organised this programme to inspire school students about food science and technology.

The event was graced by officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and several food scientists. The programme commenced with a poem recitation by professor Roji Waghmare from the Institute of Chemical Technology and Secretary of AFSTI Mumbai. Dr Shalini Arya, president of AFST, spoke about the significance of food in life, and guided the students on how traditional food can be enhanced through science.

Acting Dean of the Institute of Chemical Technology, professor Ashwin Patwardhan, encouraged students to pursue careers in food technology. Professor Shyam Sablani from Washington State University advised students to stay focused on their goals. Imran Hashmi, deputy director of the FDA's National Laboratory, provided insights into food safety and the challenges associated with it.

Dr Prakash Kondekar spoke about the historical significance of diet and current habits. Dr Pawar from the Indian National Young Academy of Sciences discussed their initiatives to promote scientific awareness among young minds.

Dr Vinayak Kamble from IISER and Dr Anupama Harshal from STEM organised a science workshop with hands-on experiments for the students. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Yogesh Gat, treasurer of AFSTI Mumbai.

Through this initiative, students gained valuable insights into cutting-edge research in food technology, food safety protocols, and sustainable food systems.
