Sample from Chocolate chain Chocolate Room and product Choco Dark Chocolate Bar were found misbranded by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation(AMC) in a recent drive against misbranded and substandard food in the city. Some 533 food samples were collected from various food businesses in this regard.

Mukesh Kumar, municipal commissioner, AMC, led the operation that witnessed multiple inspections during the months of March and April across the city and found many known products allegedly violating the norms prescribed under the FSS Regulations, 2011.

Many of the products under scanner were found either misbranded or substandard in quality and unsafe for human consumption, according to an AMC statement.

The AMC has also initiated action against such FBOs. A senior official from the department said, “The samples were collected in our daily routine of doing random inspection. We have already approached the adjudicating body and asked to take action by way of penalty against such FBOs. Also action will be taken against FBOs who are either storing or selling low quality products and notice for the same has been issued to them.”

In the month of March, an AMC official stated, “A sample collected from famous chocolate chain known as Chocolate Room was found misbranded. Another product 'Choco Dark Chocolate Bar' taken from Shaymal outlet when sent to a food laboratory for testing was found misbranded.”

Further, the pav (bun) of the vada pav (12 pav packet) from Jay Bhavani's, Shahibaug outlet, was found misbranded and sample of tomato sev taken from Bhairavnath Gruh Udhyog in Vastral, and Mango Juice (raas)  from Durga Juice Center near Bapunagar, was found of substandard quality.

Meanwhile, from samples collected in the month of April -  a sample of clove taken from Ashirvad Foods, Madhupura market, and buffalo milk from Jay Ambe Milk, Bapunagar, were found substandard, according to the AMC official.

Until April 21, 2018, the civic body collected around 533 samples of which 25 were found misbranded, while 21 samples were of substandard quality, 47 were unapproved and one sample was declared unsafe. Results of 57 samples were yet to come.
