The Union Government recently reviewed the buffer stock position of onions and its prices vis-à-vis availability of onions and pulses across the country. A meeting of the standing committee was held in this regard, and attended by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, NAFED, Mother Dairy, Kendriya Bhandar, the Delhi Government and senior officials of the Department of Consumer Affairs.
Chaired by Avinash K Srivastava, secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, the committee was informed by the officials that onion arrivals have been resumed to normal after a brief disruption of about 2-3 days during Diwali due to the closing of major mandis in Maharashtra.
Onion arrivals have also resumed in the mandis in Delhi, while further arrivals are expected to increase in the coming days. These will augment supplies and reduce prices.
Srivastava stated that NAFED was directed to continue supply of onions from the Central buffer to Mother Dairy for retailing through their Safal outlets and to supply onions to the Delhi Government and other states and UTs (Union Territories) as per their demand.
“It was also directed to undertake the disposal of pulses from the Central buffer through state governments and open market auctions, while the Delhi government and those of other states and UTs are again being asked to retail tur (whole/milled in packaged form) out of the Central buffer at reasonable prices to the consumers of their respective states/UTs,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that in recent times, after the monsoon, the prices of the onions skyrocketed. They were sold at Rs. 80-100 per kg across many states. The government also imposed a ban on the export of onions from India, after which farmers in Maharashtra declared a boycott of onion trade.
