CSIR-CFTRI announces 8 PhD awardees from Academy of Scientific & Innovative Research

CSIR-CFTRI (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research- Central Food Technological Research Institute), has awarded 8 PhD degrees from the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), between January and March 2025. These students carried out their research at CSIR-CFTRI.

The first was Krishna Prashanth M R who received his doctorate under the supervision of Dr Mohan A Dhale, principal scientist, Department of Microbiology & Fermentation Technology, CSIR-CFTRI. The title of the thesis was ‘Cost effective production and characterisation of bioactive pigment from marine bacteria’.

The second was Tamilselvan T who under the guidance of Dr Prabhasankar P, chief scientist, Department of Flour Milling, Baking and Confectionery Technology, CSIR-CFTRI worked on the development of gluten free bakery product using millets and its validation.

The third student was Tanzeem Meher who under Dr Jayadeep A, chief scientist, Department of Grain Science & Technology, CSIR-CFTRI, completed her thesis on Bioprocessing of red and black rice varieties for nutraceutical enrichment, and their quality characteristics.

The fourth student was Shree Raksha S who under the guidance of Dr Sachin M Eligar, principal scientist, Department of Traditional Foods & Applied Nutrition, CSIR-CFTRI completed her thesis on preparation and characterisation of quinoa bran protein concentrate, and evaluation of anti-proliferative activity in hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

The fifth student was Bhavya Kotnala under Dr Arun Kumar V, senior scientist, Department of Fruit and Vegetable Technology and co-supervisor Dr Vijayaraj P, principal scientist, Department of Biochemistry, CSIR-CFTRI competed her thesis on the Nutritional status and disease management of Phenylketonuria using plant-based phenylalanine free protein hydrolysate.

The sixth student was Steji Raphel who under the guidance of Prakash M Halami, chief scientist, Department of Microbiology & Fermentation Technology, CSIR-CFTRI complete her thesis titled ‘Identification of the biosynthetic gene involved in the synthesis of the peptide antibiotic of Bacillus licheniformis MCC 2514 and its application as a probiotic’.

The seventh student was Priya Mondal who under the guidance of Dr Syed Musthapa M, senior principal scientist, Department of Biochemistry, CSIR-CFTRI worked on the thesis titled ‘Dietary Epigenetic Modulators as Adjuvant Therapy against Lung Cancer: Development of Healthy Gut Formulation for Lung-Gut Homeostasis’.

The eighth student was Sanjay K who under the supervision of Dr Usharani D, senior principal scientist, Department of Food Safety & Analytical Quality Control Laboratory, CSIR-CFTRI, worked on the thesis titled ‘Inhibitor Selectivity Towards Pancreatic Lipase and Fatty Acid Binding Proteins for Reducing Fat Digestion and Absorption’.
