Duravant expands poultry processing solutions in Asia, eyes growth in India
Saturday, 29 March, 2025, 16 : 00 PM [IST]
Bangkok, Thailand
Duravant, a global leader in food processing and automation solutions, is strengthening its footprint in the Asian market with a focus on poultry processing. The company, headquartered in the United States, operates through multiple divisions, including Material Handling, Packaging, Protein, and Logistics. David Wilson, group president of Duravant, highlighted the company’s expertise in protein processing, particularly in poultry, during the recently-concluded Meat Pro Asia show.

The company’s poultry processing solutions cater to chicken, turkey, red meat (pork and beef), and even fish, along with certain alternative proteins. Wilson emphasised that the company does not engage in animal slaughter but specialises in downstream processing post-slaughter, ensuring efficiency and quality through advanced technology.

“From the moment the carcass is chilled, our solutions take over,” said Wilson. “We focus on value-added processes like portioning, x-ray analysis for bone content, injecting, cooking, and meat recovery. These are critical stages where our customers optimise yield, enhance quality, and maximise profitability.”

The Asian market, particularly Thailand and China, plays a significant role in the company’s expansion strategy. The region has a strong demand for dark meat processing, including thigh and leg deboning. Wilson elaborated on the importance of automation in addressing labour shortages and ensuring consistency in meat processing.

“The equipment we have on display here is specifically designed for dark meat deboning, which is a key requirement in Asian markets. We offer three types of deboning technology—one for whole-leg deboning, another for thigh meat separation, and a third for deboning both thighs and drums separately. These innovations help maintain high-quality standards, reduce manual labour dependency, and improve operational efficiency,” he explained.

The company has been strengthening its local presence in Asia, setting up operations in China and Thailand to cater to the growing demand. When asked about their presence in India, Wilson confirmed that Duravant operates through its sister company, Mespack, which primarily focuses on packaging solutions. While direct poultry processing solutions are not yet prominent in India, the company sees potential in expanding its offerings in the region through existing partnerships and growing market demand.

India’s poultry sector has been witnessing rapid growth, with increasing consumption of processed and value-added meat products. Duravant’s advanced processing solutions, including deboning, portioning, and meat recovery technologies, could provide significant benefits to Indian poultry processors looking to enhance yield and quality.

Wilson also touched upon the importance of residual meat recovery in optimising profitability. “Even after primary deboning, residual meat left on the carcass is valuable. Our separation technology extracts this high-quality meat, which is then used for products like sausages, burgers, and minced meat. This process ensures that no valuable protein goes to waste,” he stated.

With its continued focus on automation, efficiency, and localised expansion, the company is well-positioned to revolutionise poultry processing in Asia. As the demand for high-quality processed meat rises, the company’s innovative solutions are set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry. While India remains an emerging market for their poultry solutions, Duravant’s growing presence in packaging and processing indicates potential for future expansion in the region.
