Front-of-package symbol will identify foods high in sodium, sugar, fat

Ginette Petitpas Taylor, health minister, Government of Canada, stated that Health Canada, as a part of its Healthy Eating Strategy, has launched consultations on regulations for a new front-of-package nutrition symbol on food, which will help Canadians make healthier food choices by identifying foods high in sodium, sugars and saturated fats.

These constitute poor diets, which are a primary risk factors for such diseases as cancer, stroke, Type-II diabetes and heart disease. The rates of these chronic diseases have increased, and two in five Canadians have reported struggling with them. In fact, it is even more worrisome that some of these conditions have begun to show up in the country’s children.

Every day, Canadians make hundreds of food choices, often in a matter of seconds, and the front of a food package is the first place they look for information. A front-of-package symbol will provide a clear visual cue that a food is high in nutrients of public health concern, such as sodium, sugars or saturated fat. This symbol will complement the nutrition fact table at the back or on the side of the food package.

In order to receive feedback from Canadians before making a final decision on the symbol that will appear on foods high in nutrients of public concern, Health Canada has launched consultations on the proposed front-of-package symbol. A front-of-package symbol represents significant and important progress towards achieving the goals of Health Canada’s Healthy Eating Strategy, which takes a reasonable and responsible approach to addressing chronic diseases in Canada.
