Marel showcases cutting-edge poultry processing solutions at Meat Pro Asia 2025
Saturday, 29 March, 2025, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Bangkok, Thailand
Marel, a global leader in food processing solutions, made a significant impact at the recent Meat Pro Asia 2025 exhibition in Bangkok. The company, known for its innovative approach to poultry, meat, and fish processing, showcased its latest advancements in automation and efficiency, particularly catering to the evolving needs of the Asian market.

The company's journey began in Iceland in 1979 when two brothers developed a revolutionary weighing scale for fishing boats. Their invention allowed fishermen to accurately weigh, price, and package their catch directly on the boat, maximising both value and efficiency. This pioneering spirit has continued to define its approach to food processing, leading to its expansion through acquisitions and cutting-edge technological advancements.

In a strategic move, Marel recently merged with JBT Corporation, increasing its workforce from 8,000 to 12,000 employees. This partnership brings complementary expertise to both companies, allowing for a broader market reach and enhanced technological capabilities.

“There’s minimal overlap between the two companies, but a great deal of synergy in our market presence,” said Nick Adams, industry sales manager at Marel, during the exhibition.

At the exhibition, the company focused on poultry processing, demonstrating its ability to handle ducks, turkeys, and chickens with advanced automation. The company covers the entire process, from primary processing (slaughtering) to secondary processing (packaging and ready-to-cook products like nuggets and tenders).

One of the standout innovations was Marel’s automation of Karage production, a popular Asian dish traditionally cut by hand. The company introduced a machine that precisely determines the size, weight, and shape of chicken pieces, ensuring consistency while reducing contamination risks. This technology is expected to transform hygiene and efficiency standards in food processing.

Additionally, the company showcased immersive theatre experiences, allowing visitors to step into a virtual slaughterhouse environment. These presentations demonstrated the real-time operations of its machinery, using animations and embedded videos to illustrate the precision and speed of their equipment.

The company sees India as a rapidly growing market with increasing demand for food processing automation. It has several established facilities and a dedicated Indian team, ensuring local sales, service, and product specialisation.

“In India, the market is growing at an unprecedented rate. We used to see a few big projects each year, but now they are coming up exponentially,” noted Adams. However, challenges remain, particularly logistics and decentralisation. Unlike Europe, where food processing is centralised, India’s industry is widely spread, requiring tailored solutions for different regions.

With a strong foothold in Asia and continuous advancements in automation, Marel is set to revolutionise food processing in poultry, meat, and seafood industries. The company remains committed to innovation, ensuring efficiency, hygiene, and sustainability in food production worldwide.
