With the acquisition of Giacomo Gianotti’s masterpiece La Petroleuse Vaincue for the Musée d'Orsay, Lavazza Group joins the Paris museum’s community of art patrons and confirms its commitment to the world of art.
La Petroleuse is a bust of a woman that Ginotti first showed in a marble version at Milan’s Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti in 1881. The bronze version acquired by the Musée d’Orsay and the company was made by the artist in 1887 and cast at the Mazzola foundry in Turin.
The bust represents a proud-looking woman of the people bound with ropes around her shoulders and chest. The subject alludes to the role of the Parisians during the Paris Commune in 1871, and in particular of women rebels who set fire to numerous buildings in the capital. They were accused of using petrol to start the fires, hence the popular myth of the 'petroleuses’.
