Alimentaria and Hostelco, the major trade show platform for the food and beverage, foodservice and hospitality equipment industry, concluded recently with more than 1 lakh people in attendance at Fira de Barcelona's Gran Vía venue in Barcelona, Spain. Some 3,200 exhibiting companies from 68 countries took part in the event, to encourage business, internationalisation and competitiveness in strategic sectors for the Spanish economy. With an estimated economic impact of 180 million euros, the figures for Alimentaria & Hostelco reflect the strength of the event, which occupied nearly 100,000 m2 of net exhibition space. Anna Canal, project director, Alimentaria, delves deeper into the details about the show in conversation with Manjushree Naik. Excerpts:

Tell us how the show will cover the entire value chain because of the partnership with Hostelco.
With the partnership with Hostelco, we are able to cover the entire food service value chain. It’s a way to cover various aspects of food service, a complete range, along with products, machinery and equipments, which was in great demand by buyers. So the alliance with Hostelco allows us to show the entire food service solutions  from the food service sector.

Tell us about the merger of Hostelco and Restaurama segment.
This partnership has allowed us to display all types of different products from entire food and beverage sector and its subsector like equipment and machinery. With good amount of tourist crowd in Spain, food service and HoReCa sector is very important to us. This alliance acts as a channel to sell and showcase different services and products from food and beverage sector.s

Give us details on the customised solutions offered for each segment.
Alimentaria is a huge platform for beverage and food industry and we work in a global and transversal way. But at the end we have to differentiate the needs of meat, olive oil, dairy industry, every industry has a specific need, and we have to cover all of them.  We work with every vertical and each sector, personally, we are aware of needs of olive oil industry, which is different from dairy industry and we try to work on solution within food and beverage industry.

This is said to be the most international show of Alimentaria with record international participants. Comment.
At Alimentaria, there are lot of different exhibitors and visitors from around the world. If you have a good offer, you have a good demand. Thus there is a good amount of exhibitors who focussed on the demand and meet the demand of visitors, the buyers.

The last edition of Alimentaria, it was the post-pandemic period, there was lot of restriction to travel and exhibit but this edition we are recovering that. Also in the current edition, we have more number of visitors and exhibitors as compared to last edition.

What are Alimentaria Hub and HoReCa Hub?
Alimentaria Hub is a very big area in the Pavilion 5, that covers the whole trends and innovations that  have appeared in the market in last two years. We organise Alimentaria every two years. During this time, we can have a look at products recently launched in the market. We analyse the trends that are in the market. Thus Alimentaria Hub covers all the innovations, trends and demand from food and beverage sector.

The HoReCa Hub would be same in Pavilion 6 where lot of things happen during these four days. There are lot of different sessions and activities held here related to the food service industry. We try to give food service industry solutions to their needs and queries.

Give us details on the 13 different sectors the show covers.
Alimentaria is a transversal or global platform for the food and beverage sector. Where we give solutions or cater to the needs of individuals or companies from each and every food and beverage sector and sub-sector.

What are the five transversal shows and Premium space?
Premium space and transversal show are very important. It has a food service area, where sessions take place, tasting takes place and presentation takes place in an international pavilion covering all the global food and beverage industry.

What are the different workshops, cooking show sessions, debates and talks being held at the event?
It depends on what the visitor is looking for. If the visitor is from the food service sector, the person goes directly to the food service pavilion and finds their cooking shows, tasting and presentation which are best practices from some other country. Here, one can learn and apply these solutions in business not only in Spain, but from various countries around the world like the Netherlands and United States.

Tell us about the Hosted Buyer Programme and international pavilions.
We have arranged a Hosted Buyer programme where we have a huge number of exhibitors and ask them their interest to sell products. So we look for the most important importers, buyers and exporters to have meetings with exhibitors in Alimentaria. This edition, there are 2,000 people involved in this exhibitor-buyer meetings. This is a huge programme which gives exhibitors huge business opportunities and visibility for their products and services.
