FSSAI extends compliance date for formulated supplements stds for kids
Tuesday, 17 March, 2020, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The FSSAI has issued a notice extending the compliance of direction regarding Standards of Formulated Supplements for Children and issue of their licence.

The apex food regulator, in a statement, has said that the direction, in which it was directed on October 18, 2019, that no licence shall be given to proprietary food under category 13.2 (related to formulated supplements for children) in future while the FBOs (Food Business Operators) who already had licence under the said category prior to the said direction were advised to get their existing licence modified as early as possible before renewal of their existing licence, has been extended till June 30, 2020.

According to the apex food regulator, the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) was in receipt of several representations from the stakeholders seeking an extension of the directive.

“Representations have been received from stakeholders requesting for extension for time for compliance of the said direction. FBOs who already had licence under proprietary category prior to the said direction require transition time for modifying their existing licence which would require reformulation of such products. Further, there exists inventory which if not utilised may lead to loss to the industry,” said the notification.

According to an official with the FSSAI, after due consideration, in partial modification of direction dated October 18, 2019, it was decided to allow renewal of existing licence under proprietary category for such products till  June 30, 2020.

In October notice, the FSSAI has directed that ‘No such products should be allowed henceforth under the category of proprietary foods (for formulated supplements for children) in view of the sensitivity of the target group involved.

Further the notice said that FSSAI has notified the Eleventh Amendment Regulations specifying the standards for ‘Formulated Supplements for Children’. These standards specify the requirements of formulated supplements for children of age above 24 months to 36 months.

“Any food taken in addition to home food except food for special dietary use and food for special medical purpose for age group 24-36 shall need to comply with these standards,” the notice said while adding that no licence shall be issued or renewed to proprietary food products under the food category 13.2, i.e., complementary food for older infants and young children.
