Edible oil traders seek timely lab testing and reports to avoid rumour mongering

Edible oil traders in the country have asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to review the procedures of lab testing and report generation, as the prolonged gap in report generation gives time to rumour mongers to malign the traders.

In this regard, the edible oil traders met with the FSSAI top officials including CEO and Chairperson in Mumbai recently and handed over a memorandum on various demands seeking relief from the food authority.

The traders complained about the alleged leaking of false reports by the food safety officials before release of the actual lab analysis report.

The delegation of All India Edible Oil Traders Federation (AIEOTF) said that the matter becomes worse as the lab reports take as long as 10 months sometimes to come out thereby giving a chance for fake info to spread.

“This creates a challenge for the traders and hampers our credibility thereby affecting our overall trade. Therefore we request the FSSAI to reframe the procedures for such enforcement activity and issue fresh guidelines to make sure that such fake info is restricted,” the traders said.

The traders also sought revoking the ban on sale of loose edible oil.

Shankar Thakkar, president of the AIEOTF, said that the FSSAI top officials were informed about the problems faced by the edible oil traders due to FSSAI regulations that ban the sale of loose edible oil.

“The FSSAI made such a regulation that bans the sale of loose edible oil. We have requested the FSSAI chairperson and CEO to revoke the ban. We have also asked the FSSAI officials to let us re-use the used edible oil canisters,” said Thakkar.

He added that the traders also requested the officials to give relief from enforcement activities that result in seizure. Further he said that the FSSAI officials were requested not to make it mandatory for the traders to print licence or registration number on the receipt.

“The FSSAI has been asked to review their decisions,” said Thakkar.
