Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
FSSAI has decided to launch an enforcement and surveillance drive to ensure availability of safe blended edible vegetable oil (BEVO) with Agmark certification.

In this regard, the apex food regulator has issued an order saying that the state food safety authorities should take action against errant FBOs selling blended edible vegetable oil without Agmark certification and FSSAI licence.

The decision was taken after FSSAI got a complaint from Directorate of Marketing and Inspection (DMI), an attached office of the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare under Union Ministry of Agriculture, regarding large number of manufacturers of BEVO getting FSSAI licence without Agmark certification, whereas it is mandatory for production and sale of BEVO in the country as per FSS Act, Rules and Regulations made thereunder.

“Further, it has also been reported that some food businesses are packing combinations of blends without FSSAI licence,” says an official familiar with the matter.

According to the FSS Act, the standards of BEVO have been specified under Sub-Regulation 2.2.1(24) of the Food Product Standards and Food Additive-Regulations and labelling requirement for the same have been stipulated under Sub-Regulations 2.4.1 (11) of the Packaging and Labelling Regulations.

The official further said that, Sub-Regulations 2.3.14(11) of the Prohibition and Restriction of Sales under FSS Act provide that blended edible vegetable oil shall be sold or offered for sale only under Agmark certification.

The order, meanwhile, says, “It is requested that enforcement and surveillance may be carried out and appropriate action as per provisions of the FSS Act 2006 may be initiated against such FBOs manufacturing and selling blended edible vegetable oil without Agmark certification mark and FSSAI licence.”

The FSSAI has also sought action taken in this regard from the state food authorities.
