Mumbai water samples comply with Indian Std, Delhi samples fail: BIS survey
Tuesday, 19 November, 2019, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The water quality survey conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) across the country found water quality in the city of Delhi failing all the parameters while samples from Mumbai were found complying with the standards.

Of all the 11 samples drawn in Delhi, none were found complying with the requirements of the Indian standard and the samples failed in several of the parameters while all the 10 samples drawn from Mumbai were found complying with the requirements of the Indian Standard.

Further, in the cities of Hyderabad, Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi, Raipur, Amravati and Shimla, one or more samples did not comply with the requirements of the standard and none of the samples drawn from 13 of the state capitals i.e., Chandigarh, Thiruvananthapuram, Patna, Bhopal, Guwahati, Bengaluru, Gandhinagar, Lucknow, Jammu, Jaipur, Dehradun, Chennai and Kolkata complied with the requirements of the Indian Standard.

Testing was conducted for organoleptic and physical tests, chemical tests, toxic substances and bacteriological tests in the first stage. Test reports have been received for these tests for all the samples drawn. A vast majority of the samples have failed to comply with the requirements of IS 10500:2012 in one or more parameters.

In the next round, samples from capital cities of North-Eastern states and smart cities identified by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs have been drawn and are undergoing tests. “The results of these are expected by January 15, 2020,” informed the Ministry of Consumer Affairs in a statement.

Further, the BIS will be testing samples drawn from all the district headquarters of the country and their testing is planned to be completed by August 15, 2020. Based on the results a ranking will be given to the states.

BIS was earlier directed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution to undertake a study of the quality of piped drinking water being supplied in the country.

In the first phase, the samples of drinking water were drawn from various locations across Delhi and in the second phase samples were drawn from 20 other state capitals, and sent for testing as per Indian Standard 10500:2012 (Specification for Drinking Water).

Ram Vilas Paswan, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, said that all should get clean drinking water and the objective was not to demotivate anyone rather it was to encourage state governments to ensure quality potable tap water supply to all citizens.
