The Government of NCT (National Capital Territory) Delhi has planned a policy framework to utilise the food left in parties, particularly in occasions like marriages. The Delhi Government, according to sources, has also decided to put restrictions on the number of guests in such functions to check wastage of food and water.
A draft of the policy has already been prepared. It states that the organisers will have to take the necessary permissions from FSSAI to run their kitchens, and also have to have an NGO (non-governmental organisation) on board with them to manage the surplus food that can be distributed amongst the poor.
It is pertinent to mention here that the apex food regulator has recently issued a notification prescribing regulations for the distribution of the surplus food.
The draft stated that to ensure safe and hygienic food at social functions, it is the responsibility of those responsible at the social function site to provide complete information about the name of the organiser and the date and time of the function in advance to the department of the food safety, Government of NCT Delhi.
The draft hs also laid down provisions for penalty for violations. According to the draft, the organisers are liable to pay Rs 5 lakh as fine for the violations of the norms that can go up to Rs 10 and Rs 15 lakh for a second and third offence.
Besides, such social functions are not allowed to take place at unauthorised venues, while a fine of Rs 15 lakh is recommended for that.
The Government of NCT Delhi has also submitted a draft to the Supreme Court after it has raised concerns over the misuse of farmhouses and motels for marriages and other social functions.
