Red hexagonal warning label for packaged HFSS items proposed

In its submission to the Supreme Court, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) proposed a red hexagonal warning label for packaged food items high in fat, sugar, and salt (HFSS).
As per reports, the proposal was submitted to the SC through a compliance affidavit, filed by the FSSAI in response to a Public Interest Litigation seeking mandatory front-of-the-pack warning labels for packaged food based on the fat, salt, and sugar content.
The reports added that under the proposal, a red hexagonal warning label will be displayed on the packaged food if the product has at least two of the three specified constituents— saturated fat, added sugar, and salt— while the threshold will be based on the dietary guidelines for Indian citizens issued by the National Institute of Nutrition.
Further, the warning may also carry declarations like ‘high fat’, ‘high sugar’, ‘high salt’, ‘highly sweetened beverage’, etc., depending on the composition.
The regulator further has proposed a phased implementation of the regulations related to front-of-the-pack labelling wherein ‘adequate’ time could be given to the industry to comply with the provisions.
FSSAI has also submitted that single-ingredient products like ghee, sugar, jaggery, honey, and edible oil would remain outside the purview of the proposed front-of-the-pack labelling norms.
