Nalco to check contamination of sugar with 3D Trasar monitoring device

Nalco Water India Limited is now looking to tap the sugar industry in India with 3D Trasar, which is an online monitoring device designed to check sugar contamination in vapour condensate.

With the patented Trasar technology, the non-sugar components in the sugar juice fluoresce can be detected with an online fluorometer.

“Specifically for sugar units, 3D Trasar has a controller, a sugar fluorometer, a sampling conditioning system (SCS), a pH and conductivity monitoring module and the Nalco Global Gateway,” stated Santhakumar Arul, industry development manager, marketing, Nalco Water India Limited.

“The condensate flows through the flow cell housed in the fluorometer. As the sample passes through, a light of specific wavelength is continuously aimed at the flow cell. The fluorophores emits photons at specific wavelength, which are detected and converted into intensity. The fluorometer is a solid-state device and can monitor the juice contamination in condensate in real time. The measurement does not involve the use of any reagents, and hence the method is safe for the operators,” he added.

During the sugar manufacturing process, vapour condensates are available from multiple effect evaporators, juice heaters and vacuum pans, which are used for concentrating the sugar juice.

“In sugar cogeneration plants, steam condensates are returned to the boiler after the heating processes. It is vital to ensure that the condensate does not have even a trace of contamination from any process leaks that might occur. Detection of the contamination events or sugar shots help to improve plant efficiency and protect assets,” said Arul.

Field trials were conducted using the technology to assess its performance against other monitoring methods like conductivity. The 3D Trasar for Sugar outperformed conductivity and wet chemistry-based monitoring methods in terms of sensitivity and early reliable detection.

“Based on the extensive data collected during the trials and feedback from customers, it was proven that 3D Trasar technology automatically manages process discharge based on the on-line detection results. The technology further enhances the effectiveness of condensate reuse and minimises the negative impact of sugar entrainment on boilers,” said Arul.
