The ambassador and permanent representative at the United Nations and International Organisation, Vienna has written to the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and urged routing of all 'substantive proposals' related to UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) through Permanent Mission of India, Vienna.
Jaideep Mazumdar, ambassador and permanent representative at the United Nations and International Organisation, urged in his letter that all substantive proposals related to UNIDO along with sufficient background information may be coursed through PMI, Vienna, given that Embassy of India is the accredited Permanent Mission to UNIDO and is tasked with regular contact with the organisation and its senior management on issues of interest for India.
“I would therefore urge that proposals dealing with UNIDO, be coursed through this Mission, with sufficient background information so that we are able to pursue them energetically with the organisation. This is true even when a proposal has been discussed with UNIDO's field office in New Delhi,” wrote Mazumdar and added that as a nodal Department for UNIDO matters, he would urge that DPIIT bring this matter to the attention of all concerned.
The letter was also shared with the MoFPI officials.
The letter was written in response to a direct approach by the MSME Department, seeking technical assistance for one of its programmes from the UNIDO while the Embassy of India, Vienna, is the accredited Permanent Mission to UNIDO.
The ambassador wrote, “We are accordingly tasked with regular contact with the organisation and its senior management on issues of interest for India. Other Member States similarly interact with UNIDO on substantive issues through their Missions in Vienna. It is our experience that organisations such as UNIDO are likely to take issues of our interest seriously when regular follow up and monitoring is conducted by the accredited Mission.”
