The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to 15 food business operators (FBOs) for allegedly deceiving consumers with misleading brand names, trade names, and exaggerated product claims.
The national food regulator stated that the companies were violating the labelling and display regulations under the FSS Act.
The companies served notices were involved in the manufacturing of vitamins, vegan products, chips, bread, pizza base, poha, edible oil, amongst others.
The notices were issued over claims and the use of terms like ‘organic’, ‘healthy & tasty’, ‘true’, ‘plant-based’, ‘zero maida’, ‘healthy chips’, ‘health aid’ and so on.
According to FSSAI, companies were found using brand names, which may mislead consumers regarding the nature of the product. Further, trade names were also found misleading which do not conform to the applicable regulation, and many claims were found to have not applied for the food category like vegan.
Also, certain food products claimed to be ‘healthy’ while they contained other ingredients as well.
“The FBOs are directed to strictly comply with the established labelling and display regulations to avoid consumer deception,” reads a FSSAI statement.
