Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has recently won in Taiwan the eAsia Award for developing Traceability software used for tracking organic foods. This was informed to FnB News by Sanjay Dave, director, APEDA, in a chat over telephone.
“The award was given to APEDA after many discussions by the jury in which it concluded that no other country had developed such Traceability system, for its features and also for the fact that around 5 lakh farmers were associated with this including around 20-30 certification bodies, exporters and traders and it was our biggest achievement,” Dave said.
Dave revealed that the Traceability software for organic foods had become a successful project in the history of APEDA. He said that the software, which was developed in May 2010, was implemented in June 15, 2010, after receiving many complaints related to many of the Indian food products that were exported to other countries and rejection felt for the same.
Revealing more details on the software, Dave stated that this was an Internet-based electronic service provided to stakeholders, farmers / producers in order to facilitate a process certification for the export of organic food products.
He then said that through this system, the Net collects all the records of the farm produce such as the details of the registration of products, certification, price and quality assurance entered by the different organic producers in the country adding that APEDA would be solely responsible for any kind of wrong information or improper data entered.
“For this, we had conducted around 36 trainings for different stakeholders and organic farmers on handling the software to avoid any confusion later,” Dave added.
