Country can save Rs 25,000 cr with organic farming: Expert

A two-day national symposium-cum-brainstorming workshop on organic agriculture was held recently at CSK Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University. Around 150 scientists, planners and farmers from all over the country participated in the workshop jointly organised by the Organic Agricultural Society of India, Department of Agriculture, HP, and National Centre of Organic Farming.
According to a press release by the host university, Dr Tej Partap, vice-chancellor, Shere-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science & Technology, Kashmir, who was present as chief guest said that even if merely 10 per cent of farming in the country was turned organic there would be net saving of Rs 25,000 crore on subsidies for farm inputs. He asked the scientific community engaged in organic research to empower the farmers with useful technologies. He also elaborated on the future of organic agriculture in the country.
In his presidential remarks, Dr S K Sharma, vice-chancellor of the host university, informed that his university would consider introducing courses in organic farming. Dr J C Rana, director of agriculture, HP, gave details on various programmes meant for promoting organic farming in the state.
Dr A K Yadav, director, National Centre of Organic Farming, said that it was imperative to restore soil health and fertility for sustainable agriculture and added that the country had limited options and organic agriculture was need of the times.
Dr S P Sharma, Director of Research, CSKHPAU, suggested that a special lab to test organic inputs be established in the State. Dr Y S Paul, prof. & head, department of organic agriculture, elaborated on various activities related to teaching, research and extension education and Dr J P Saini also expressed his views.
