The Food Safety Department of Tamil Nadu has taken action against a private medical supplies store in Thiruvallur district of the state for selling human milk.
The store was shut down by the local authorities after a raid was conducted where pasteurised human milk was recovered.
According to local authorities, 40 bottles of human milk was recovered from the raided premises while one 50 ml bottle was reportedly being sold at Rs 500.
Samples of the seized human milk were later sent for lab analysis.
It is pertinent to note that the commercial sale of human milk is banned in India and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently issued an advisory stating that processing and selling of human milk is a violation of the FSS Act, 2006.
Ashwin Bhadri, CEO, Equinox Labs, says that the FSSAI's decision to ban the commercial sale of breast milk is a sensible measure due to the lack of regulations for human milk.
"There have been instances where our labs were approached for human milk analysis. While our labs have the expertise to analyse various food products, human milk currently falls outside the scope of FSSA regulations. This makes it challenging to offer standardised testing for breast milk safety. However, we hope the recent FSSAI decision paves the way for clearer guidelines in the future. Ensuring the safety of breast milk is paramount, especially for vulnerable infants who rely on milk banks," he said.
