Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art Bio-CNG and fertiliser plant developed by Banas Dairy in Vav-Tharad district of Gujarat, while also laying the foundation stone for a 150-tonne milk powder manufacturing unit. The twin projects, launched on December 6, are poised to strengthen the region’s dairy infrastructure and promote sustainable rural development.
Addressing the gathering, Shah underlined that these projects align closely with the vision of White Revolution 2.0 set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi an agenda that focuses on modernising India’s dairy sector with technology-backed productivity, robust animal health programmes, and value-added product expansion. He highlighted that initiatives such as the National Gokul Mission and the National Animal Disease Control Programme have played a crucial role in improving breed quality, increasing milk yield, and ensuring disease-free livestock.
Shah praised Banas Dairy one of Asia’s largest dairy cooperatives for emerging as a national model of rural empowerment. He noted that the dairy’s annual turnover has now touched Rs 24,000 crore, a milestone achieved primarily due to the efforts of its cooperative framework and the contribution of women dairy farmers. “The women of Banaskantha have scripted a remarkable story of self-reliance. Their hard work has not only strengthened household incomes but has elevated the district into a dairy powerhouse,” Shah said.
In a significant announcement, Shah revealed that 250 dairy leaders from across India will visit Banaskantha in January to study the cooperative’s management and operational model. “Banas Dairy is not just an institution it is an inspiration for every rural co-operative in the country,” he added.
The Home Minister placed special emphasis on the newly inaugurated Bio-CNG plant, calling it a breakthrough for the cooperative sector. The plant will convert cattle dung and agri-waste into compressed biogas and organic fertiliser, ensuring additional income for farmers while reducing environmental waste. Shah said the project would drive a circular economy in the region, where waste is converted into energy and nutrients, creating value at every stage of the dairy chain.
He encouraged dairy cooperatives across India to adopt similar green-energy models, reinforcing that such initiatives would significantly contribute to rural sustainability, carbon reduction, and farmer prosperity.
With the milk powder plant expected to enhance processing capacity and the Bio-CNG unit set to transform waste management, the twin projects mark a major step forward for Gujarat’s dairy sector and reaffirm the state’s leadership in cooperative-driven development.
