The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has initiated the process to launch new regulations to govern organic products under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
These will be the eighth edition regulation standards, and their draft was released last year for stakeholders consultation while the regulations were last updated in 2014.
According to APEDA, the new set of regulations were more farmer-friendly and would help in achieving the export target of USD2 billion for organic products by 2030.
The new set of rules include streamlined process for certification, simplified requirements for farmers and improved transparency.
Further, the traceability of the organic products has been enhanced under the new set of regulations for NPOP.
It is pertinent to mention that the NPOP standards for production and accreditation system have been recognised by European Commission and Switzerland for unprocessed plant products as equivalent to their country standards.
The total volume of export during 2023-24 was 2,61,029 MT. The organic food export realisation was around ?4007.91 crore (494.80 million USD).
Organic products are exported to USA, European Union, Canada, Great Britain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Vietnam, Australia, Thailand, New Zealand, Japan, Korea and so on.
