British Hotel chain Premier Inn has analysed TikTok hashtag data to reveal which food markets across the world are currently trending. The study has shown that while Delhi’s Chandni Chowk food market is placed at sixth, Souq Waqif in Qatar’s capital of Doha is the most popular food market on the platform, with over 47,000 hashtags.

London is a favourite for market foodies, with its Camden and Borough Markets ranking in second and third place globally; Pike Place in Seattle ranks as the top trending street food market in USA, with 14,000 hashtags followed by Ponce City Market in Atlanta as eighth, as well as Kensington Market in Toronto. In addition, the Big Apple’s Smorgasburg and Chelsea Market are also placed in the top 10.

Savouring the local cuisine is one of the most exciting reasons to travel. In fact, many travellers choose destinations based solely on the quality and regionality of food on offer, and with cuisine offering such a fantastic way to learn more about a culture, food markets have become a staple for any avid explorer.

Street food markets are continuing to grow in popularity, with Google Trends data reporting a 10% increase in searches for the destinations, which allow travellers to ‘eat like the locals’ in a cost-effective and casual setting, over the past year.

Among the largest and busiest markets in Lagos, Balogun offers a variety of delicious snacks that reflect the rich culinary culture of the area. Visitors can find fresh egg rolls, puff-puff and akara among the local foods on offer, as well as many other locally produced goods such as textiles and clothing in other areas of the market.

A spokesperson for Premier Inn said, “Food is something that excited many about travel and allows us to really connect with the culture and heritage of a location. With so many chain restaurants in each city, opting to head to a local food market instead can reveal delicious foods that you may not otherwise get the opportunity to try, not to mention that it also gives the opportunity for everyone to eat what they want, at a reasonable price. Street food markets have become incredibly popular in UK in recent years and are something that many of our guests enjoy, but it’s always worth keeping them in mind when visiting other places in the world too.”
