Broccoli emerged as a symbol of smarter, healthier eating at a recent Broccoli Consumption Conference held in Mumbai, where experts from food, health, sports and agriculture discussed the importance of preventive nutrition and sustainable food systems.
Organised under the theme “From Soil to Soul, From Farm to Fork: Daily Broccoli, a Treasure of Health,” the conference highlighted how simple dietary changes can help address lifestyle-related diseases while also supporting farmers and local agriculture.
Among the key speakers was Padma Shri awardee and celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, who stressed that broccoli is no longer an exotic ingredient in India. He noted that the vegetable is nutritious, visually appealing and versatile, and said increased awareness would make it more accessible and affordable for households.
Former Indian cricket captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth drew parallels between sports and food choices, emphasising the need to embrace innovation and healthier diets. Sharing his personal experience of including broccoli regularly in his meals, he pointed to the growing focus on fitness and nutrition among Indians.
Model and wellness expert Claudia Ciesla underlined the importance of returning to whole, unprocessed foods. She highlighted the role of fibre-rich vegetables like broccoli in preventing lifestyle diseases, improving gut health and supporting women’s nutrition.
A broccoli-themed cooking contest added a culinary dimension to the event, with home chefs presenting innovative dishes such as broccoli paratha, broccoli soup and steamed broccoli cupcakes, showcasing its adaptability across cuisines.
The conference aligned with national initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and broader sustainable development goals, reinforcing the connection between healthy eating, sustainable farming and public well-being.
