Campco advocates for Areca nut farmers’ livelihood in strategic meeting with experts

Campco embarked on an initiative to advocate the need that Areca nut farmers need to have a better livelihood in this regard strategic meetings with experts were held to identify best practices, improve market access, and promote sustainable farming techniques.
Recently with a delegation, led by Kishore Kumar Kodgi, president, Campco along with Dr B V Sathyanarayana, managing director, Campco; Dr Keshav Bhat, executive officer, Areca nut Research and Development Foundation (ARDF) met Dr Soumya Swaminathan, former chief scientist of the World Health Organisation, at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.
The delegation engaged in in-depth discussions, emphasising that the WHO's classification of Areca nut as carcinogenic has significantly impacted the livelihoods of lakhs of Areca nut farmers. More than 20 research papers were presented by the delegation indicating that Areca nut is not carcinogenic and has anti-cancer properties.
Dr Swaminathan understood the farmers’ problems and suggested to present such reliable data to International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) and World Health Organisation through Government of India for reviewing their observation on carcinogenicity of Areca nut. She assured her support for the farmers, including advocating for discussions with the Ministries of Agriculture and also Health and Family Welfare.
