CAMPCO delegation calls on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath; seeking relief on mandi tax burden. SR Sathishchandra, president CAMPCO and Dr BV Sathyanarayana, managing director CAMPCO, discussed issues affecting arecanut farmers and cooperative institutions.
During the meeting, Sathishchandra highlighted the difficulties being faced by cooperative organisations due to the levy of Mandi Tax on arecanut trade in Uttar Pradesh. It was explained that CAMPCO, a farmer-owned Multi-State Cooperative with a farmer Membership of over 1.50 lakh growers, has been severely affected by the present tax regime, which has increased the cost of legitimate trade and reduced its competitiveness against unorganised market operators.
The team from CAMPCO pointed out that arecanut procured from Karnataka is already subjected to APMC cess/market fee at the place of origin and is again subjected to Mandi Tax in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in a double incidence of market fee on the same produce. CAMPCO also informed the Chief Minister that the additional tax burden has adversely impacted its business operations in the State, leading to a substantial decline in turnover and compelling the closure of its Kanpur sales depot.
The Dakshina Kannada- based company requested the Government of Uttar Pradesh to consider removal of Mandi Tax on arecanut, or alternatively grant exemption to cooperative institutions, besides providing relief from the double incidence of market fee. It was submitted that such measures would strengthen transparent and organised trade channels, protect the interests of lakhs of farmers, and contribute to higher revenue generation through legitimate business activities.
According to the CAMPCO communication note the UP Chief Minister responded positively to the issues raised by the CAMPCO delegation and assured that Government would extend all possible support to cooperative institutions and sympathetically examine the concerns presented.
During the interaction, Adityanath also expressed keen interest in CAMPCO's activities and its value-added ventures. He conveyed his desire to visit CAMPCO's Chocolate Factory at Puttur on a convenient future date to understand the cooperative's contribution towards farmer welfare, value addition and rural economic development.
The CAMPCO delegation expressed gratitude to the UP Chief Minister for the patient hearing and positive response and conveyed confidence that his support would greatly benefit the farming community and strengthen the cooperative movement. The meeting was also attended by Ravishankar, branch manager, CAMPCO Lucknow Branch, and Shivaprasad, officiating personal assistant to Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary, who assisted in coordinating the interaction and discussions, said the company’s communication note.
