The Government of India is actively strengthening the dairy sector by implementing comprehensive training and awareness programmes for dairy farmers, milk producers, and cooperative staff under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD). The initiative aims to boost productivity, improve milk quality, and promote modern animal husbandry practices across states, including Punjab.
Under the NPDD, financial assistance is provided for a range of capacity-building activities focused on good hygienic and manufacturing practices, clean milk production, balanced cattle feeding, milch animal rearing, adoption of green fodder, mineral mixtures, and related dairy practices. These sessions are designed to equip dairy stakeholders with up-to-date knowledge and skills to enhance operational efficiency at the grassroots level.
In Punjab, a total of Rs 445.63 lakh has been sanctioned for these programmes, with Rs 109.75 lakh utilised up to December 11, 2025. This investment supports structured training in line with approved programme schedules and envisaged participant coverage, enabling broader adoption of improved dairy practices among farmers and cooperative members.
Complementing the NPDD efforts, the Rashtriya Gokul Mission continues to invest in activities that promote bovine health and productivity. Since the inception of the scheme, Rs 58.97 crore has been released to Punjab for initiatives such as fertility camps, milk yield competitions, and calf rallies, of which Rs 56.40 crore has been utilised effectively. These activities are crucial in building awareness of breeding excellence and improving herd quality in the state.
The information was provided by Rajeev Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. His statement highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening dairy livelihoods through targeted training and support for producers.
