The Government of India has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the dairy sector through a range of targeted support measures under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) and allied initiatives, according to a recent statement by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. These details were provided by the government in Parliament in response to queries from Members of Parliament, underscoring continued focus on infrastructure, productivity and farmer welfare.

The NPDD, initially implemented in 2014 and realigned in 2021, supports creation and enhancement of dairy infrastructure, including quality milk testing equipment, primary chilling facilities and village-level milk collection units. It also promotes market access and value addition for dairy products by strengthening producer-owned institutions such as milk cooperatives, milk producer companies and federations across participating states.

Government data indicate that dairy cooperatives and producers have benefitted from improved access to technology, processing capacity, and organizational support. Training and capacity-building activities have been integrated into these schemes to equip dairy farmers with modern practices that improve milk production, hygiene, animal nutrition and overall farm management.

In Parliament, officials also highlighted the role of additional allied schemes such as the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) and the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, which complement NPDD objectives by enhancing breed improvement, feed availability and overall livestock health. These coordinated efforts aim to boost productivity, ensure quality control, and expand organised milk procurement networks, contributing to higher incomes for rural producers and strengthening India’s position as a global dairy leader.

The response underlined that proactive government engagement, coupled with cooperative sector participation, continues to drive sustainable growth and resilience in India’s dairy sector, benefiting millions of farmers nationwide.
