The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved an increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the Marketing Season (RMS) 2027-28.
The highest increase of Rs 675 per quintal has been approved for safflower, followed by Rs 413 per quintal for rapeseed and mustard and Rs 390 per quintal for lentil (masur). The MSP for barley has been increased by Rs 136 per quintal, gram by Rs 83 and wheat by Rs 25.
Accordingly, the MSP for wheat has been raised to Rs 2,610 per quintal from Rs 2,585, while barley has been fixed at Rs 2,286 per quintal, compared with Rs 2,150 earlier. The MSP for gram has been increased to Rs 5,958 from Rs 5,875, and that for lentil to Rs 7,390 from Rs 7,000. Rapeseed and mustard MSP have been raised to Rs 6,613 from Rs 6,200, while safflower MSP has been increased to Rs 7,215 from Rs 6,540.
The increase is in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 decision to fix MSP at a minimum of 1.5 times the All-India weighted average cost of production. The expected margin over production cost stands at 106per cent for wheat, 96per cent for rapeseed and mustard, 92per cent for lentil, 59per cent for gram, 58per cent for barley and 50per cent for safflower.
The government said the higher MSPs are aimed at ensuring remunerative returns to farmers and encouraging crop diversification, particularly towards pulses and oilseeds. In recent years, the government has been promoting crops other than cereals by providing higher MSPs for these commodities.
Wheat procurement during 2014-15 to 2025-26 increased to 3,715 lakh tonnes (LMT), compared with 2,254 LMT during 2004-05 to 2013-14. Procurement of the six Rabi crops during 2014-15 to 2025-26 stood at 3,921 LMT, against 2,302 LMT in the earlier period.
The MSP amount paid to wheat growers during 2014-15 to 2025-26 rose to Rs 7.31 lakh crore from Rs 2.56 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14. For farmers growing the six Rabi crops, MSP payments increased to Rs 8.36 lakh crore from Rs 2.65 lakh crore over the corresponding periods.
