The Government of India has decided to withdraw the wheat stock limit order issued on May 27, 2025, following a sustained improvement in wheat availability across the country ahead of the upcoming festive season, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution announced.
The earlier order — The Removal of Licensing Requirements, Stock Limits and Movement Restrictions on Specified Foodstuffs (Amendment) Order, 2025 — was applicable to all States and Union Territories. Its withdrawal reflects the Government’s confidence in the supply situation of wheat and its ability to meet both domestic needs and welfare programme requirements.
Under the revised approach, private entities holding wheat stocks will no longer be bound by limits previously imposed, but will be required to declare their stock positions every Friday on the Food Stock Portal (https://foodstock.dfpd.gov.in). This measure will help maintain transparency in the market while ensuring government monitoring continues.
Data from stock declarations for the 2025–26 marketing year shows that private wheat stocks stand at approximately 81 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) — about 30 LMT higher year-on-year, indicating a comfortable buffer in supply.
Market intelligence from the Department of Consumer Affairs also indicates that wheat prices in the wholesale markets have softened, with the current rate at around Rs 2,852 per quintal, compared to ?2,970 per quintal last year, suggesting subdued demand and strengthening supply conditions.
Wheat acreage in the ongoing rabi season has also expanded to around 334.17 lakh hectares compared to 328.04 lakh hectares last year, reflecting continued farmer interest in cultivation supported by assured Minimum Support Price (MSP) and procurement prospects. The government will continue to monitor wheat stocks and prices closely to ensure adequate availability and price stability, especially during the festive period, and to meet the operational requirements of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and other welfare schemes.
