The 89th Session of the Codex Executive Committee (CCEXEC89) has commenced at FAO headquarters in Rome, signaling the start of preparations for the upcoming 48th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), scheduled for mid-November. The Executive Committee’s deliberations are critical for ensuring the global food standard-setting body remains efficient, science-driven, and capable of addressing modern challenges to the food system.
In his opening remarks, FAO deputy director-general Godfrey Magwenzi emphasized the centrality of Codex to the mission of "ending hunger and ensuring access to safe, nutritious food for all." The role of Codex was prominently highlighted during FAO’s recent 80th-anniversary celebrations, underscoring its enduring impact on global food trade and public health.
Echoing this commitment, Luz De Regil, director of WHO's Nutrition and Food Safety Division, restated the World Health Organization’s dedication to the Codex framework. She stressed that WHO and FAO are jointly focused on transforming global food systems to tackle "the urgent challenges of our time—climate change, emerging food safety issues, antimicrobial resistance, and the adoption of innovative approaches and technologies."
CAC chairperson Allan Azegele, who is leading the CCEXEC89 meeting, affirmed that the committee’s work this week is instrumental in safeguarding Codex’s integrity. Discussions include reviewing the monitoring framework and the output of four specialized committee meetings.
The core mission remains clear: to protect consumer health and ensure fair practices in the international food trade. As the Executive Committee clears the strategic groundwork, the upcoming Commission session is anticipated to adopt new and revised standards that will shape regulatory frameworks for food safety and quality across member nations globally.
