The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has expressed concerns over the alleged practice of FMCG companies using quick commerce and e-commerce platforms as dumping grounds for near-expiry and non-movable stocks.
The federation in a statement said that this practice, often disguised through hefty discounts, compromises consumer health & rights and destabilises the traditional retail market impacting their financial stability.
The matter came to fore after a raid on Zomato storage facility in Hyderabad, where a batch of mushroom was found with future expiry date.
"We are witnessing an alarming trend where manufacturing companies are flooding the market with near-expiry and non-movable stocks, leveraging consumers with substantial discounts to push these products. This practice not only jeopardises the livelihood of small and medium retailers but also poses significant risks to consumers who may unknowingly purchase compromised products," reads the statement.
AICPDF flagged concerns related to health risk associated to food safety and sought intervention of Department of Consumer Affairs.
"The department should implement strict regulations to monitor & control the sale of near-expiry and non-movable stocks on quick commerce and e-commerce platforms, and enforce transparency in labelling for products that are close to expiration," said AICPDF.
