The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation (AICPDF) has expressed serious concerns following the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) findings, which revealed that exclusivity agreements between major food delivery platforms, Swiggy and Zomato, and their restaurant partners are preventing the market from achieving healthy competition.
A statement by AICPDF expressed that the investigation, which began in 2022 after complaints from the National Restaurant Association of India, highlights a growing crisis for traditional retailers and local businesses impacted by the aggressive and anti-competitive practices of these platforms.
Dhairyashil Patil, national president of AICPDF, said, "Both Swiggy and Zomato have leveraged their substantial resources and reach to capture market share in grocery delivery, offering significant discounts that local distributors and retailers simply cannot match."
The AICPDF has urged the Competition Commission of India to take swift and decisive action against the 'monopolistic' behaviour of these platforms.
"By enforcing stringent regulations and putting a stop to anti-competitive agreements, the AICPDF believes that the government can safeguard India’s retail distributors, many of whom are on the brink of collapse due to the predatory practices of these well-funded tech giants," reads the statement issued by AICPDF.
