Considering production, Govt agrees to lift ban on export of wheat products
Wednesday, 21 January, 2026, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Government has accepted the request to lift ban on export of wheat products that had been in place for the past four years.

According to Shankar Thakkar, national secretary, CAIT, the Government took the decision after considering last year's stock and this year's production figures, wherein Indian farmers have achieved significant success in wheat production.

"Therefore, there was a demand from producers of wheat-based products for permission to export, which has now finally been granted. The export permission will be valid for six months. This means that exporters must complete the shipment within the stipulated time. If, for any reason, an extension of the deadline is required, the Special EXIM Facilitation Committee will decide on such cases on a case-by-case basis," said Thakkar.

According to the government notification, a maximum of 5 lakh tonnes of wheat flour and related products are allowed for export. Applications for this will be accepted for the first time between January 21 and January 31. After this, applications for export permission will be invited during the last 10 days of each month. This process will continue until the total quantity specified is reached.

Only those with the necessary licences and documents will be able to benefit from this policy. An import-export code and FSSAI licence are mandatory for flour mills and wheat processing units.

Traders and exporters can also apply, provided they have valid documents and a firm agreement with flour mills. This will ensure that only organised and reliable businesses engage in exports.

Thakkar added that this decision will open up new markets for the flour traders and other wheat product industries and reduce the pressure of excess supply in the domestic market.

"If production is high and there is a risk of prices falling, exports can also provide support for farmers. Overall, this decision is beneficial for wheat-based products and farmers, and indicates that the government is now more confident about the supply situation and is gradually bringing balance to its export policy," said Thakkar.
