The Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) called for closer cooperation with India on reliable edible oil supply, sustainable production and consumer information during GLOBOIL India 2026 in Mumbai.
“India is much more than an export destination for palm oil producing countries. It is a partner in our shared pursuit of food security, resilient supply chains, productive farmers and sustainable growth,” said Izzana Salleh Secretary-General, CPOPC. “
The Council recognised India’s efforts to expand domestic edible oil production. It said stronger domestic capacity and dependable international supply can work together to support India’s long-term food security. It also identified oil palm agronomy, planting materials, smallholder productivity, traceability and sustainable sourcing as practical areas for cooperation with Indian partners.
Addressing the conference’s palm oil session, Dr. Musdhalifah Machmud, Deputy Secretary-General, CPOPC said growing domestic demand for biofuels in producing countries makes timely communication with importing markets increasingly important.
“Food and energy security are both legitimate objectives. As national biofuel policies evolve, transparency and dialogue will help producers and Indian buyers plan ahead. Improving productivity, particularly among smallholders, is also essential to strengthening long-term supply, said Izzana Salleh.
”CPOPC said its member countries’ combined palm oil production rose from approximately 66 million tonnes in 2021 to 73 million tonnes in 2025. The Council cautioned that future supply would depend on investment in replanting, improved agricultural practices and support for farmers, alongside responsible management of domestic and export demand.
The Council is also seeking a closer understanding of how Indian consumers view palm oil.
On October 1, CPOPC, the Asian Palm Oil Alliance (APOA), the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) and Solidaridad Asia will convene a stakeholder roundtable, 'Understanding Palm Oil Perceptions and Consumer Narratives in India'.
The discussion will bring together perspectives on nutrition, sustainability, responsible sourcing and food marketing. It will examine how consumers interpret claims such as “Palm Oil-Free” and identify where clearer, evidence-based information may be needed. The roundtable is intended as a listening and discussion forum; its participants will consider any possible follow-up after hearing the range of views.
“Our relationship with India cannot be built only around tonnes and prices. It also requires listening to Indian stakeholders, understanding consumer concerns and working together on credible information,” Izzana Salleh said.
CPOPC’s engagement at GLOBOIL builds on the cooperation it established with the Asian Palm Oil Alliance and Solidaridad Asia in Mumbai in 2025. The Council said continued dialogue between producing countries and Indian industry can help both sides respond to changing market conditions while supporting farmers, businesses and consumers.
