CSIR-CFTRI Mysuru has appointed Dr Parvatam as new director

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi (Ministry of Science and Technology), has appointed Dr Giridhar Parvatam, chief scientist & head, FSAQCL department as new director of CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysuru and he assumed charge on September 8, 2025.
Dr Parvatam did M.Sc. Botany with Microbiology specialisation from Kakatiya University, Warangal, Telangana and completed his PhD in Botany Microbiology specialisation from Kakatiya University in 1996. His area of specialisation is Food Science and Technology, Microbiology, and Biotechnology. He joined CSIR-CFTRI as scientist ‘B’ in CSIR-CFTRI, Mysuru in 1999, and thereafter has held various positions in CSIR-CFTRI and also functioning as professor, AcSIR.
He is fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, UK; National Academy of Biological Sciences; Association of Food Scientists and Technologists; Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences; Academy of Plant Sciences, India; Indian Botanical Society; and the Society for Applied Biotechnology. He is elected member of National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, and Plant Tissue Culture Association of India. He is also the recipient of Professor V Puri Commemorative medal of Indian Botanical Society (2021); Outstanding Scientist Award of the Society of Tropical Agriculture, India; International Plant Scientist Award of the Academy of Plant Sciences, India; Best Scientist Award – Food Technology by National Academy of Biological Sciences (2015); and Lalji Godhoo Smarak Nidhi Award for Food Scientists of Association Food Scientists and Technologists, India, among others. He has to his credit 8081 citations, and 217 publications including 53 H-index and 141 i10-index publications, book chapters, proceedings of Conferences/Symposia/Seminars, and Review Articles and 09 patents. He has authored 02 Books, and developed, licensed and/or commercialised two technologies. He has supervised 17 PhD students and 54 PG dissertations.
The research projects undertaken by Dr Parvatam are intricately designed to align with the specific expectations of R&D funding agencies and to evolve contemporary research in the field. His research findings have made significant contributions to the domains of food science, industrial applications, and wider plant biotechnology community. His R&D work has significantly contributed to Plant Sciences, particularly in Biochemistry, functional genomics, tissue culture, and study of secondary metabolites, with exceptional skills shown in advanced genomics in coffee and soybean.
