CSIR-CFTRI organises three-day workshop for Maharashtra cashew farmers

With the support of the department of industries, government of Maharashtra, Mysuru’s CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) organised a three-day workshop focusing on value-added cashew products, packaging requirements, cashew apple juice and regulatory and safety issues for cashew farmers from Maharashtra under a framework of cluster development and farmer-centric workshops on its campus recently.

A series of customer development programmes, on similar lines, has already been lined up to empower the farmers and farmer producer organisations (FPOs). The horticulture departments of other state governments have also got in touch with CSIR-CFTRI to organise customised farmer-centric training programmes for shorter durations. The institute has already geared up to meet their demands on a continual basis.

CSIR-CFTRI has now extended its support to Maharashtra to produce cashew crop by cultivating it on an area of 1.81 lakh hectare. Currently, around one lakh farmers are involved in the production, processing and marketing of cashew in the Konkan region. The majority of these are marginal farmers, and they supply raw cashewnut to market. Middlemen exploit them, and there is meagre value realisation for their produce.

However, the demand for cashews is on the rise, and the country has realised Rs 5,600 crore worth export of cashew and allied products in the last year.

“Considering the growing demand for the quality and variety of cashew products in the market, farmers and young entrepreneurs in the cashew farming community have shown great interest in enhancing the unit value realisation,” according to Ram Rajasekharan, director, CSIR-CFTRI, who distributed certificates to the participants in the programme.
