CSIR-CFTRI scouts for industry partnerships for tech transfers to boost food processing

CSIR-CFTRI (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research- Central Food Technology Research Institute) is attracting industries, which are looking for implementing projects with highest societal impacts under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The Mysuru-based institute at its 75th Foundation Day held on October 22, 2024, stated it is currently running CSR projects worth Rs 328 lakh (exclusive of GST) of which Rs 172 lakh is the highest ever in a financial year in CFTRI received.

The four new projects funded by Milltec Machinery Private Limited, Bengaluru (AGI Milltec), which is the producer of food processing machineries to facilitate rice milling, pulses, seeds, maize, and multi-commodity processing.

Central Electronics Limited (CEL), New Delhi, is a Government of India Enterprise under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology. The Financial Advisor of CSIR  Chetan Prakash Jain is the Chairman and Managing Director, CEL.

Lapp India Bengaluru which designs and manufactures wires, cables, connectors, glands and other networking solutions.

Bank Note Paper Mill India Private Limited (BNPM) situated in Mysuru and engaged in production of bank note papers for Reserve Bank of India.

The title of the new CSR projects are: Establishment of selected secondary millet processing lines suitable for Farmers, FPOs (food processing organisations), SHGs (self-help groups) and other allied sectors.

Alleviation of anaemia in mothers of pre-school children through dietary interventions in Mysuru District was another initiative. Then came in the immune boosting food formulation for children and geriatric conditions.

There is also the Nutrition Intervention Programme for malnourished children in Mysuru District. Here nutritional food supplements of 500 numbers were developed for malnourished pre-school children.

Reinstating its product development capabilities, the Biodegradable Cutlery Research & Innovation Center was  established under the Project Shree Anna which is the Millet Mission of CSIR. The Centre hosts the pre-processing, manufacturing and analytical equipment for development of the biodegradable cutlery and tableware. This initiative marks a significant leap forward in collective efforts to address the environmental challenges posed by plastic waste while capitalising the vast potential of millet processing by-products and wastes.

At the CFTRI 75th day celebration,  the refreshments were served in biodegradable plates made in the Centre on trial basis. The journey in innovation will continue with research efforts focusing on developing edible alternatives of the cutlery and tableware, offering opportunity to enjoy the meal and even eat the utensils in which it is served. The project is lead by Dr. Aashitosh A Inamdar, Senior Principal Scientist, along with Dr. Suresh D Sakhare and  Saravanan M from Flour Milling, Baking & Confectionery Technology Department, stated the institute.
