The area under cultivation for Rabi crops, including mustard and wheat, is expected to increase in the 2025-26 season. According to experts, above-average rainfall this year has helped create favourable conditions for this.
By December 5, 2025, total sowing had reached 637.81 lakh hectares, which is approximately 75% of the normal area. Favourable soil moisture and strong reservoir levels and water availability have accelerated sowing.
Shankar Thakkar, national secretary, CAIT, has informed that wheat sowing has seen a sharp increase of 11%, with the area rising to 241.40 lakh hectares, compared to 217.81 lakh hectares during the same period last year. Mustard sowing has also increased by 5% to 84.14 lakh hectares.
“Total agricultural sowing has increased by 6.2% to 479.02 lakh hectares, compared to 451.12 lakh hectares during the same period last year,” said Thakkar.
Also, Rabi paddy sowing has increased by 11.4% to 10.98 lakh hectares. Maize sowing has increased by 3.3% to 11.41 lakh hectares, and barley to 5.95 lakh hectares. Sorghum remained almost stable at 18.08 lakh hectares.
For pulses, the total sowing was 106.21 lakh hectares, wherein Chana area increased by 3.6% to 77.84 lakh hectares, while Masoor sowing decreased by 7.3% to 12.98 lakh hectares.
Thakkar added that among oilseeds, mustard showed the strongest performance, with sowing increasing to 79.88 lakh hectares, a 4.5% increase from 76.43 lakh hectares last year.
“The government has set a total food grain production target of 171.14 million tonnes for the Rabi 2025-26 season, including 119 million tonnes of wheat, 15.86 million tonnes of rice, 16.57 million tonnes of pulses, and 3.17 million tonnes of nutri-cereals. The oilseed production target has been set at 15.07 million tonnes, of which 13.9 million tonnes are expected to come from mustard,” said Thakkar.
