Drunken Monkey, a responsible QSR (quick service restaurant) chain collaborated with the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) towards a groundbreaking step of including 80 per cent vegan options by June 2020.

Drunken Monkey has 78 outlets around India, and is looking at expanding to 150 outlets by the end of 2019. And this change will be effective for all their branches mid-year 2020.

This collaboration is part of FIAPO’s corporate engagement campaign to encourage businesses to use cruelty-free ingredients. It is a huge step towards a positive and sustainable future by a brand of the stature of The Drunken Monkey.

A report by the United Nations (UN) said that a global shift to plant-based diet is essential to save the planet from world hunger and worst impacts of climate change.

“As the world population is estimated to be a 9.1 billion by 2050, diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable,” stated the report from United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management.

Celebrating the partnership, Samrat Reddy, chief executive officer, Drunken Monkey, said, “Every one of us is indebted to Mother Nature and it is our responsibility to make our planet a more inclusive for all living things.”

“Drunken Monkey is glad to be associated with FIAPO in its quest of animal protection and is keen to make a difference. We are excited to announce that starting next year, 80 per cent of Drunken Monkey Menu will have vegan options,” he added.

Varda Mehrotra, executive director, FIAPO, said, “Drunken Monkey’s pledge is a landmark win for the vegan movement in India. This win not only positively impacts the farmed animals and the planet, but also sets a tone on where the future of F&B brands in India is headed.”

“I think Drunken Monkey has set a huge example for all other QSRs in India of how necessary it is to think futuristic, stay eco-conscious and execute change-management with such grace and efficiency,” he added.

Priyanka Sharma, senior programme manager, corporate engagement, FIAPO, said, “It was fairly easy to work with Drunken Monkey as their core brand values revolve around sustainability and providing healthy options to their customers.”

“The answer to all of this is vegan. Reddy and the Drunken Monkey team embraced this information with genuine interest to make a difference,” she added.

In the past few months, FIAPO has tied up with brands like Menchie’s, Fruktville and Bakeshop for inclusion of vegan options in their menu for health and environmental reasons.
