The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched its first-ever artificial intelligence-powered HR avatar, named “Ms FAO AI”, marking a key step in its digital transformation journey.
Designed as a virtual colleague and not merely a robot, Ms FAO AI will operate across FAO’s global network of employees providing support 24/7 in all of FAO’s official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish) so that staff anywhere can access consistent information and services.
FAO director-general Qu Dongyu described the tool as “a reflection of our collective attitude, our willingness to learn, to change, and to lead.” He emphasised that the avatar was created to put people first—making internal processes more reliable, accessible and inclusive.
The introduction of Ms FAO AI follows the earlier launch this year of another AI chatbot, HR CertusCare, designed to assist employees with HR queries about health insurance, performance management, recruitment and other human-resources topics. Both systems use interactive, learning-enabled interfaces to meet staff needs more efficiently.
By deploying Ms FAO AI, FAO aims to streamline internal workflows, reduce routine administrative burdens, and enable staff to focus more on mission-critical tasks. The avatar is expected to standardise how queries are handled across time zones and languages, thereby strengthening FAO’s commitment to inclusivity and equity in staff support.
Beyond the technological advance, FAO frames this move as an institutional shift—towards openness, resilience and agility in global operations. While acknowledging that technology cannot replace human values, FAO emphasises that digital tools must serve humanity and enhance rather than supplant interpersonal support.
With Ms FAO AI now live, the organisation is creating a one-stop digital support environment for its employees, aiming to strengthen internal efficiency even as it continues pursuing its external mission of ensuring food security and sustainable agriculture worldwide.
